Paper or Plastic?
To help prevent more plastic from ending up in the ocean, Dressmann now offers paper bags.
To help prevent more plastic from ending up in the ocean, Dressmann now offers paper bags.
Every minute, 15 tons of plastic end up in the ocean, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This has a huge impact on fish, birds, and all marine life – and ultimately on us humans. If nothing is done, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
The EU has therefore adopted a directive that requires member states to reduce the consumption of plastic carrier bags.
We had a conversation about this with Christiane Fagertun, Head of Sustainability at Varner, which Dressmann is part of.
– In response to the EU’s new directive, Dressmann has replaced plastic bags with paper bags. These are FSC certified, a certification scheme founded to ensure sustainable forestry and prevent deforestation, Christiane explains and continues:
– Our paper bags are made from 100% recycled paper, which is both biodegradable and recyclable.
There are also negative aspects of using a paper bag, just like with plastic bags.
– We have chosen to sell paper bags to help reduce plastic pollution, even though paper bags have a more energy-intensive production process and higher CO2 emissions in transport and production.
